Malcolm Cant, a 79-year-old man from St Mellons in Cardiff, tragically passed away after contracting Legionnaires' disease during a holiday in Turkey. Mr. Cant traveled to a hotel in Kemer, Turkey, with his family from February 17 to 24, 2022. Upon returning home, he began experiencing flu-like symptoms and feeling unwell. His family grew concerned after he failed to respond to calls, prompting a visit to check on him.

Environmental health officials later confirmed that Mr. Cant developed pneumonia caused by Legionnaires' disease, a condition contracted by inhaling tiny droplets of water containing legionella bacteria. He passed away on March 13, 2022.

The family believes Mr. Cant contracted the bacteria while staying at a Tui resort. A coroner ruled that his death was due to natural causes following exposure to the bacteria between February 18 and 23. The family is now considering legal action against Tui, who have not commented on the situation.

Joanne Brine, the family’s solicitor from JMW, emphasised the importance of recognising the symptoms of Legionnaires' disease, which are similar to flu: a cough, high temperature, muscle aches, and headaches. She advises anyone experiencing these symptoms after a holiday to seek urgent medical advice and mention recent contact with hotel water sources or spas.

Malcolm's daughter, Tracey, expressed the family's heartbreak: “We as a family are heartbroken to have lost our dad in these circumstances, and feel robbed of the years we could have spent with him. You do not go on holiday expecting anyone to contract Legionnaires’ disease. This was our dad’s first holiday after Covid and Turkey had always been his favourite place to go. He was full of joy and fun knowing he was about to go on holiday – he was full of life. We all feel absolutely shocked that something so joyful can turn into such a nightmare.”
